Nina Koivumäki won her ticket to Beijing at an early stage by placing fifth at the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. In early 2008 she enhanced her credentials by placing second at the Super World Cup tournament in Hamburg. Nina first took up judo since the age of six following the example of her elder brother. Her spouse Petteri Luukkainen has also competed in the Finnish national judo team. Nina studies for a Master’s degree in Adult Education at the University of Tampere. She also serves as an instructor of the university judo club. Her favourite hobby is needlework.

JOHANNA YLINEN

Johanna Ylinen earned her Olympic quota place the hard way, by picking up enough points over two World Cup seasons to qualify through the European ranking list. Her best results were second place in the tournament in Tallinn in 2007 and third place in Sofia in 2008. Johanna has a versatile background in combat sport: she has won a Finnish championship title in wrestling as well as in judo. She studies for a degree in environmental planning at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences.
