Tommi Evilä became an instant national hero in Finland in 2005, when he won the only medal of the host nation at the World Championships in Helsinki. He has remained one of the most popular sports personalities in the country due to his outspoken character and despite a string of injuries that have kept him out of major international competitions since that great day three years ago. An injury also robbed Tommi of a trip to Athens 2004, which only made him ever more determined to fulfil his lifelong dream of Olympic success in Beijing. The Olympic year of 2008 has indeed seen him already improve on his Finnish record. Tommi chose long jump as his sport “because it is the closest thing to flying”. His second greatest passion is playing the guitar.

Event: 3000 m steeplechase
Jukka Keskisalo evoked memories of the glorious days of old when he stormed past the field on the final lap to win gold in the 3,000-metre steeplechase final at the European Championships in Gothenburg. His victory was the first one for Finland in track races at any major championships since 1978 and in the steeplechase since 1936. Jukka was duly elected Finnish Athlete of the Year 2006. Good years have been few and far between in Jukka’s career. He first came to the fore in 2003 with a promising top ten finish at the World Championships in Paris.
