Finland was represented at the Beijing Olympic Games by 57 athletes. The official target of the Finnish team was met, as the athletes achieved a total of four medals, including one gold. Finland's only Olympic champion in Beijing was Satu Mäkelä-Nummela in women’s trap shooting.
Juha Hirvi, shooter and Olympic silver medallist from Sydney, has the honour to bear the Finnish flag in the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. It is Hirvi’s sixth time in the Olympic Games, which is a record among Finnish athletes that he will share with the dressage rider Kyra Kyrklund in Beijing and three Winter Games athletes: cross-country skiers Marja-Liisa and Harri Kirvesniemi and ice hockey player Raimo Helminen.
Altogether 58 athletes will be representing Finland in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The biggest sport is athletics with 20 athletes. Next ones are sailing with 9 athletes and shooting with 8 athletes. 26 athletes of the team are women and 32 are men.
Niina Kelo and Vanessa Vandy are two new track and field athletes, who have been nominated to the Finnish Olympic Team in Beijing. Mikaela Ingberg, Jussi Heikkilä and Mikko Halvari are still potential new athletes for the team. They are going to compete next Sunday to prove that they are in condition after injuries. In addition there are also Robert Häggblom and Mikko Latvala, who's participation will be also decided permanently after next Sunday. They are also suffering for the minor injuries.
The goal of the Finnish Olympic team in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is three medals with at least one gold medal. 54 athletes have been nominated to the Finnish Olympic team after the last selection. Apart from these there will still be some nominations made in track and field after the Kaleva Games take place in Finland. The final number of athletes will be at least 57, but there is a possibility that the number of athletes will rise over 60.
