Finnish athletes won one silver and four bronze medals at the Vancouver Games, their lowest total score at Olympic Winter Games since 1932. The best result was Peetu Piiroinen’s silver in the halfpipe snowboard competition. Cross-country skiing yielded only two medals: the women won bronze in the relay, and Aino-Kaisa Saarinen took another bronze in the 30-kilometre mass start race. Both Finnish ice hockey teams ended their tournaments on a happy note: the men won bronze after many ups and downs, and the women beat arch-rivals Sweden in the bronze-medal game with an overtime goal. Closest to Olympic victory came the speed skater Mika Poutala, who led the men’s 500-metre event after the first race but finally ended in fifth place. Ski jumper Janne Ahonen and Nordic combined athlete Hannu Manninen both made an emotional return for one more shot at Olympic glory and both finished in fourth place. Laura Lepistö’s sixth place was the best ever Finnish result in women’s singles figure skating.
