ATHENS 2004

  • 13–29 August 2004
  • 301 official medal events.
  • 10,625 competitors from 201 countries.
  • Finnish team: 53 athletes.

Only 53 Finnish athletes qualified for selection to the Athens Games, which made the Finnish team smallest at Olympic summer Games since 1932. The success of the team was also poorest ever in Finnish Olympic history. Two proud records of Finnish Olympic sports came to an end in Athens 2004. For the first time ever Finnish athletes failed to win any gold medals at all at Olympic summer Games. Skeet shooter Marko Kemppainen came closest, losing the gold to Italy’s Andrea Benelli in a shoot-out following a tie in the final. The other Finnish silver medal in Athens was won by Marko Yli-Hannuksela in Greco-Roman wrestling. Finnish track and field athletes had won Olympic medals at every Games ever since Athens 1906. This series ended in Athens 2004, where the best Finnish result was Tero Pitkämäki’s eighth place in men’s javelin throw.
