SALT LAKE CITY 2002
- 8–24 February 2002
- 78 official medal events.
- 2,399 competitors from 77 countries.
- Finnish team: 100 athletes.
The Finnish hero of the Salt Lake Games of 2002 was Samppa Lajunen, winner of all three gold medals in Nordic combined. The sprint competition was a new Olympic event. In the normal competition Jaakko Tallus accompanied Lajunen with silver, the first one-two finish for Finland in any Olympic event at summer or winter Games since Squaw Valley 1960. Janne Lahtela exchanged his silver from Nagano to gold in the Olympic moguls competition at Deer Valley. Finland came within a hairsbreadth of a fifth gold medal, as the ski jumping team lost the Olympic title Germany only by 0.1 points. Finnish cross-country skiing was left without a medal for the first time since 1928. Both Olympic ice hockey tournaments ended in Finnish disappointments as well. The men’s team lost its quarter-final to Canada and the women were beaten in the bronze medal game by Sweden.
