ALBERTVILLE 1992

  • 8–23 February 1992
  • 57 official medal events.
  • 1,801 competitors from 64 countries.
  • Finnish team: 68 athletes (62 participated in official events).

Toni Nieminen, aged 16, entered history books at the Albertville Games by becoming the youngest ever Finnish Olympic champion. One of the first ski jumpers to master the revolutionary new “V” style, Nieminen took an overwhelming victory in the large hill competition and also decided the gold for Finland in the team event. Marjut Lukkarinen won gold and silver in the Classical-style events of women’s cross-country skiing, while Jari Isometsä beat Sweden’s Torgny Mogren in the final leg to win bronze for Finland in the men’s relay race. The most surprising Finnish medallist of the Games was the biathlonist Harri Eloranta. The performance of the Finnish ice hockey team was much less inspiring, and the silver from Calgary was exchanged for a lowly seventh place.
