- 29 January – 9 February 1964
- 34 official medal events.
- 1,093 competitors from 36 countries.
- Finnish team: 58 athletes (52 participated in official events).
The overall success of the Finnish Olympic team at the Innsbruck Games was better than at any other Olympic Winter Games since Chamonix 1924. The cross-country skiing competitions held at the village of Seefeld were dominated by Eero Mäntyranta, winner of two gold and one silver medal. In the women’s 5-kilometre race Mirja Lehtonen lost the gold medal by only 2.4 seconds. For the first time the Olympic program included two separate ski jumping competitions, and for the only time in Olympic ski jumping the results were decided by best two jumps out of three. Veikko Kankkonen won gold in the normal hill competition and silver in the large hill. Veikko Hakulinen, the cross-country skiing hero of three previous Olympic Games, competed now in biathlon. He was fastest in skiing but shot poorly and finished in 15th place. Kaija Mustonen won two medals in speed skating, while the Finnish ice hockey team finished predictably in sixth place.
