SANKT MORITZ 1948

  • 30 January – 8 February 1948
  • 22 official medal events.
  • 668 competitors from 28 countries.
  • Finnish team: 32 athletes (24 participated in official events).

The only Finnish victory at the first post-war Olympic Winter Games came in a prestigious event. Norwegians had taken every medal in every Olympic Nordic combined competition ever held, until the 21-year-old Heikki Hasu won gold in Sankt Moritz 1948 by virtue of his superior skiing. Martti Huhtala accompanied him on the medal podium. In cross-country skiing events Finland had to contend with silver in the relay and Benjam Vanninen’s bronze in the 50 kilometres. Lassi Parkkinen and Pentti Lammio maintained Finland’s reputation in speed skating with silver and bronze in the marathon distance. For the first time ever Finnish skiers took part in Olympic Alpine skiing competitions. For the last time ever military patrol skiing featured in the program as an unofficial event, with Finland finishing in second place, as always before.
