PARIS 1924

  • 5–27 July 1924 (competitions in various sports from 4 May to 27 July).
  • 131 official medal events.
  • 3,069 competitors from 44 countries.
  • Finnish team: 131 athletes (120 participated in official events). One participant in art competitions.

The Paris Games of 1924 marked the greatest days of Finnish Olympic sports. Finnish athletes won an all-time high of 37 medals, and only the United States took more gold medals. Finnish runners were best in all eight long-distance events from 1,500 metres to the marathon. Paavo Nurmi won five gold medals, Ville Ritola a total of six medals, both unique feats at one Games in the history of track and field athletics. The veteran Albin Stenroos provided the finishing touch with his victory in the marathon. Also in athletics, Jonni Myyrä retained his Olympic title in the javelin, as did Eero Lehtonen in the pentathlon. Finland was still dominant on the wrestling mat as well, ten out of twelve participants in Greco-Roman wrestling winning a medal. Other Finnish medal sports at the Paris Games were shooting and yachting.
